1. Scenario

I was the First Officer of HL123, in the cruise, when we hit a short burst of clear-air turbulence — sharp, out of nothing, gone in seconds.

The seatbelt sign had been on for the passengers, but the cabin crew were still working, and one of them got thrown against the galley. The purser reported a suspected arm fracture — painful, but she was conscious and stable. Her colleagues gave first aid and splinted the arm, and we contacted our medical advice service; with about forty minutes to destination, their advice was that continuing was reasonable.

The part people forget came next. A cabin crew member is not just a patient — she is a door. The purser reassigned her door to another crew member, strapped her into a seat, and confirmed every exit was still covered for landing.

On the flight deck, we reported the turbulence and asked ATC whether the aircraft ahead had smoother air; they checked with two flights and gave us a lower level that was riding smooth. We also asked for paramedics to meet the aircraft at the gate. She went to hospital on arrival, and the X-ray confirmed a simple fracture.

2. At a Glance

English — A short burst of clear-air turbulence threw a working cabin crew member against the galley — a suspected arm fracture. First aid, medical advice, forty minutes to go: continuing was reasonable. But an injured crew member is also an uncovered door, so the purser reassigned her exit and strapped her in, while we got a smoother level from ATC through ride checks and arranged paramedics at the gate. The rule: a crew injury is a medical case plus a safety case — treat the person, then re-cover the door.

6. Sentence Frames

  • We hit ____ — sharp, out of nothing. → We hit a short burst of clear-air turbulence — sharp, out of nothing.
  • One of the cabin crew got ____. → One of the cabin crew got thrown against the galley.
  • She was ____, but conscious and stable. → She was in pain, but conscious and stable.
  • The purser reassigned ____ and confirmed ____. → The purser reassigned her door and confirmed every exit was covered.
  • We asked ATC whether ____ ahead. → We asked ATC whether the aircraft ahead had smoother air.

One of the cabin crew got thrown against ____."

7. Common Mistakes → Better Phrasing

The plane shaked hard.We hit a short burst of clear-air turbulence.
A crew was hurt her arm.One of the cabin crew got injureda suspected arm fracture.
She was OK but not OK.She was in pain, but conscious and stable.
Another crew does her job.The purser reassigned her door to a colleague.
Is the sky soft in front? We asked for a ride check with the aircraft ahead.
Doctor comes to airport. We asked for paramedics to meet the aircraft at the gate.

  • One of the cabin crew got injured during the turbulence.
  • She got thrown against the galley.
  • Nobody else got hurt.

9. Model Answer — Q1

"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."

In the cruise, we hit a short burst of clear-air turbulence with no warning. The passengers were belted, but one of the cabin crew got thrown against the galley and had a suspected arm fracture.

Her colleagues gave first aid and splinted the arm, and our medical advice service agreed that with forty minutes to go, continuing was reasonable. The purser then reassigned her door to another crew member and strapped her into a seat, so every exit was still covered for landing. We reported the turbulence, asked ATC for a ride check with the aircraft ahead, and moved to a lower level that was riding smooth — and we asked for paramedics to meet us at the gate.

She went to hospital on arrival with a simple fracture. A crew injury is a medical case plus a safety case — you treat the person, then you re-cover the door.

10. Model Answer — Q2

"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"

They did the useful things without being pushed. When we asked about the ride ahead, the controller actually checked with two aircraft instead of guessing, and the lower level he gave us was genuinely smooth — that is the difference between an answer and a real answer. The paramedics were also confirmed for the gate well before our descent.

What I would change is the arrival stand. We were first assigned a remote stand, which meant a longer drive for the ambulance and stairs instead of a bridge for an injured crew member; we asked, and it was changed to a terminal stand. When a flight reports medical on board, a close-in stand should be part of the package from the start. Apart from that, the support was quick and practical.

11. Follow-up Q&A

  1. How do line pilots usually handle a cabin crew injury? → The same as any medical case first — first aid and medical advice. But then comes the crew part: an injured crew member leaves a door uncovered, so the purser reassigns exits and the continue-or-divert decision takes the remaining crew into account.
  2. Why did you continue instead of diverting? → She was conscious and stable, the medical advice supported it, and destination was only forty minutes away — a diversion would not have gotten her to a hospital much sooner.
  3. Why does one injured crew member matter so much for landing? → Because evacuation planning assumes every exit has trained hands on it. One empty door changes that picture, so it has to be reassigned before landing, not after.
  4. What did you tell ATC, and why? → The turbulence report for the aircraft behind us, the request for a smoother level, and the medical arrangement for arrival — the three things they could actually act on.
