1. Scenario

I was the First Officer of HL123, a twin-engine aircraft, in the cruise.

During the cruise, the autopilot suddenly disconnected and would not re-engage. That meant we had to hand-fly the aircraft, which increases the workload, especially over a long sector.

To manage the higher workload, we divided the tasks clearly. The Captain hand-flew the aircraft, so that he could focus only on flying, and I took over the radio, the navigation, and the checklist.

We told ATC about the autopilot failure, and we requested a direct routing to reduce our workload. We also kept the cabin crew informed, in case we needed anything.

The systems were otherwise normal, so we continued to our destination and made a normal, manually flown approach and landing.

(At a glance)

English — In the cruise, the autopilot disconnected and would not re-engage, so we had to hand-fly the aircraft. That raises the workload, so the key is good task-sharing: one pilot flies, the other handles the radio, navigation, and checklist. We told ATC, asked for a direct routing to reduce workload, and continued to a normal manual landing. On its own, this is manageable and not an emergency.

(Sentence Frames)

  • During the cruise, the ____ disconnected and would not re-engage. → … the autopilot disconnected and would not re-engage.
  • That meant we had to ____. → That meant we had to hand-fly the aircraft.
  • We divided the tasks so that ____. → … so that one pilot could focus only on flying.
  • I took over ____. → I took over the radio, the navigation, and the checklist.
  • We requested ____ to reduce our workload. → We requested a direct routing to reduce our workload.

We divided the tasks so that ____ could ____."

The autopilot turned off by itself. The autopilot disconnected and would not re-engage.
We flew by hand.We had to hand-fly the aircraft.
It became very busy.It increased the workload.
We split the jobs.We divided the tasks clearly.
He only flew the plane. He could focus only on flying.
We asked for a shortcut. We requested a direct routing to reduce workload.

"~하도록 / ~하기 위해"는 so that + 주어 + could/can으로 말합니다.

  • We divided the tasks so that one pilot could focus on flying.
  • I took over the radio so that the Captain could concentrate.
  • We requested a direct routing so that we could reduce our workload.

핵심: "so that + 사람 + could + 동사원형" = "그 사람이 ~할 수 있도록".

9. Model Answer — Q1

"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."

During the cruise, the autopilot suddenly disconnected and would not re-engage. That meant we had to hand-fly the aircraft, which increases the workload, especially on a long sector.

To manage the higher workload, we divided the tasks clearly. The Captain hand-flew the aircraft, so that he could focus only on flying, and I took over the radio, the navigation, and the checklist.

We told ATC about the autopilot failure and asked for a direct routing to reduce our workload. We also kept the cabin crew informed, in case we needed anything from them.

The other systems were normal, so we continued to our destination and made a normal, manually flown approach and landing. On its own, an autopilot failure is manageable — the important part is sharing the workload well and not letting either pilot get overloaded.

10. Model Answer — Q2

"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"

Overall, ATC supported us well. When we told them the autopilot had failed and asked for a direct routing, they gave us the shortcut quickly and kept their instructions simple, which really helped while we were hand-flying.

One thing that would help is keeping frequency changes to a minimum in a situation like this, since every extra task adds to the workload. But in our case they were clear and undemanding, and that made the flight much easier to manage.

11. Follow-up Q&A

  1. Why is an autopilot failure a workload problem? → Hand-flying takes a lot of attention, so the flying pilot has less spare capacity, and the other pilot has to pick up the radio, navigation, and checklists.
  2. How did you share the tasks? → The Captain flew the aircraft and focused only on flying, and I took over the radio, navigation, and the checklist.
  3. Why did you ask for a direct routing? → A simpler route means fewer turns and less navigation work, so it reduces the overall workload.
  4. Was this an emergency? → No. On its own it is manageable. It would become more serious if it happened with bad weather or another failure at the same time.
