자주 나오는 표현(declare an emergency, divert, priority…)

1. Scenario

I was the First Officer of HL123, a twin-engine aircraft in the cruise.

During the cruise, a lavatory smoke detector activated in the rear of the cabin. I immediately informed the senior cabin crew, and they went to investigate with a fire extinguisher and protective breathing equipment.

The cabin crew located the source — smoke was coming from the waste bin in the rear lavatory — and fought the fire with a BCF extinguisher. They reported that the fire was extinguished and the smoke was clearing.

Even though the fire was out, we could not be completely sure there was no hidden fire, so as a precaution we decided to divert to the nearest suitable airport. We declared an emergency, informed ATC, and requested priority and emergency services standing by on arrival.

I coordinated closely with the cabin crew, briefed the passengers, and we carried out a normal approach and landed safely. After landing, we requested the fire crew to inspect the lavatory area before we continued to the gate.

(At a glance)

English — During the cruise, a lavatory smoke detector activated. Unlike a cargo fire, cabin smoke can be reached and fought by the cabin crew, so the flow is: the crew investigatelocate the sourcefight the firereport. Even after the fire is out, you cannot be completely sure there is no hidden fire, so diverting as a precaution is the standard decision.

(Sentence Frames)

  • A ____ detector activated, so I informed the ____. → A lavatory smoke detector activated, so I informed the senior cabin crew.
  • The cabin crew went to investigate with ____. → … with a fire extinguisher and protective breathing equipment.
  • They located the source and fought the fire with ____. → … with a BCF extinguisher.
  • They reported that ____. → They reported that the fire was extinguished.
  • As a precaution, we decided to ____. → As a precaution, we decided to divert to the nearest suitable airport.
  • I coordinated with the cabin crew and asked them to ____. → … and asked them to monitor the area and prepare the cabin.

As a precaution, we decided to ___".

We fired the extinguisher. We discharged a BCF extinguisher.
Cabin crew put out the fire. The cabin crew extinguished the fire.
We said the cabin crew to check. We asked the cabin crew to investigate.
We smelled smoke so we just landed. We diverted as a precaution.
The fire finished. The fire was extinguished.
We talked with the cabin crew.We coordinated closely with the cabin crew.

  • The purser reported that there was smoke in the rear lavatory.
  • The cabin crew confirmed that the fire had been extinguished.
  • We informed ATC that we needed to divert.

"There is smoke" → reported로 바꾸면 "…reported that there was smoke."

9. Model Answer — Q1

"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."

During the cruise, a lavatory smoke detector went off in the rear of the cabin. I told the senior cabin crew straight away, and they went to investigate with a fire extinguisher and protective breathing equipment.

They found the source quickly — smoke was coming from the waste bin in the rear lavatory — and they fought the fire with a BCF extinguisher. They then reported that the fire was out and the smoke was clearing.

Even so, we couldn't be completely sure there was no hidden fire, so as a precaution we decided to divert to the nearest suitable airport. We declared an emergency, told ATC, and asked for priority and for the emergency services to stand by.

I worked closely with the cabin crew and briefed the passengers, and we landed safely. After landing, we asked the fire crew to check the lavatory area before we continued to the gate.

10. Model Answer — Q2

"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"

Overall, I was happy with how ATC handled it. After we declared the emergency, they gave us vectors and priority to the nearest airport. They also arranged the emergency services, so the crew was ready when we arrived. That let us focus on the cabin.

One thing I might change is the handover of details — letting the airport fire service know earlier that the smoke came from a rear lavatory, so they could bring the right equipment. Even so, their quick support helped us land safely.

11. Follow-up Q&A

  1. Why did you divert even though the fire was already out? → Because we could not be sure there was no hidden fire, so we diverted as a precaution.
  2. What was the role of the cabin crew? → They investigated, located the source, and fought the fire, then reported to the flight deck.
  3. Why is coordination with the cabin crew so important here? → The fire was in the cabin, not the flight deck, so the cabin crew were our eyes and hands — good CRM kept everyone on the same plan.
  4. What did you request from ATC? → Priority handling, radar vectors to the nearest suitable airport, and emergency services standing by.
