1. Scenario

I was the First Officer of HL123, a twin-engine wide-body aircraft on descent into our destination.

While we were descending through approximately FL180, we received a cargo smoke warning, indicating smoke in the forward cargo compartment.

The Captain continued to fly the aircraft, while I ran the cargo smoke checklist and discharged the cargo fire suppression system. Because smoke or fire in the cargo compartment is a serious threat, we decided to land as soon as possible.

We declared an emergency and informed ATC that we had a cargo smoke indication and needed to divert to the nearest suitable airport. ATC provided radar vectors and priority handling, and we requested emergency services to be standing by on arrival.

I briefed the cabin crew about the situation and asked them to prepare the cabin for a possible evacuation. We continued an expedited descent and landed safely. After landing, we requested the fire crew to inspect the aircraft before taxiing.

(At a glance)

English — During the descent, a cargo smoke warning came on for the forward cargo compartment. A cargo fire cannot be seen or fought directly, so the priority is to land as soon as possible. The flow is: run the checklist (discharge the fire suppression) → declare an emergencydivert to the nearest suitable airportrequest emergency servicesprepare the cabin.

(Sentence Frames)

  • While we were ____ing, we received a ____ warning. → While we were descending, we received a cargo smoke warning.
  • Our first priority was to ____. → Our first priority was to follow the checklist.
  • Because ____, we decided to ____. → Because a cargo fire is a serious threat, we decided to land as soon as possible.
  • We declared an emergency and informed ATC that we needed to ____. → … that we needed to divert to the nearest suitable airport.
  • We requested ____ to be standing by on arrival. → We requested emergency services to be standing by on arrival.
  • I briefed the cabin crew and asked them to ____. → … and asked them to prepare the cabin for a possible evacuation.
  • After landing, we requested ____ to inspect the aircraft. → … we requested the fire crew to inspect the aircraft.

Our first priority was to ___" + "we decided to ___".

There was smoke. We received a cargo smoke warning.
We opened / turned on the fire system. We discharged the fire suppression system.
We changed airport. We diverted to the nearest suitable airport.
We made an emergency. We declared an emergency.
We said to firemen come.We requested emergency services to be standing by.
We came down fast.We carried out an expedited descent.
Firemen checked the plane. The fire crew inspected the aircraft.

  • 벌어지던 배경 → 과거진행 (was / were + -ing)

While we were descending, we received a cargo smoke warning.

"While we were ___ing, we ___ed" 한 패턴이면 거의 모든 Task C 도입부를 깔 수 있습니다.

  • We discharged the suppression system because smoke in the cargo compartment is dangerous.
  • The cargo smoke warning stayed on, so we decided to land as soon as possible.

9. Model Answer — Q1

"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."

While we were descending through about FL180, we got a cargo smoke warning, showing smoke in the forward cargo compartment.

Our first priority was to follow the checklist. The Captain kept flying the aircraft, and I ran the cargo smoke procedure and discharged the cargo fire suppression. A cargo fire is serious, because we can't see it or fight it directly, so we decided to land as soon as possible.

We declared an emergency and told ATC that we had cargo smoke and needed to divert to the nearest suitable airport. ATC gave us radar vectors and priority, and we asked for the emergency services to stand by on arrival.

I briefed the cabin crew and asked them to prepare for a possible evacuation. We then made an expedited descent and landed safely, and after landing we asked the fire crew to check the aircraft before we taxied.

So the problem was a possible cargo fire during the descent. By following the checklist, talking clearly with ATC, and working with the cabin crew, we handled it safely.

10. Model Answer — Q2

"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"

From a pilot's perspective, ATC did a professional job. As soon as we declared the emergency, they gave us vectors to the nearest airport and priority, which really lowered our workload. They also set up the emergency services, so the fire crew was ready when we landed.

One thing they could improve is earlier information about the runway and the weather at the diversion airport, which would help us plan sooner. But overall, they were calm and quick, and that made a real difference.

I think ATC did a good job because… / Overall, I was satisfied with… / From my point of view… / If anything, … / Even so, … / In the end, …

11. Follow-up Q&A

  1. Why is a cargo fire considered so serious? → Because the crew cannot directly see or fight the fire, so the priority is to land as soon as possible.
  2. Why did you brief the cabin crew? → To prepare the cabin for a possible evacuation and to keep the whole crew on the same page (CRM).
  3. What did you request from ATC? → Radar vectors to the nearest suitable airport, priority handling, and emergency services standing by.
  4. Why did you ask the fire crew to inspect the aircraft after landing? → A cargo fire can continue or reignite, so the aircraft should be checked before taxiing.
