Day 59 · Phase 5 — Full Simulation
Random mock test
Task C
1. How Today Works
2. Mock Test 1 — Tire Burst on Takeoff
Situation: During the takeoff roll, just after V1, you felt a strong thump from the landing gear, followed by vibration. The aircraft was already committed to fly. Describe what happened and how you handled it.
힌트(배운 표현을 옮겨 심으세요): a strong thump / continued the takeoff — committed / a suspected tire burst / kept the gear down? or raised it? / asked the tower to inspect the runway for debris / requested the longest runway and the fire service / a long, gentle landing.
Just after V1 on the takeoff roll, we felt a strong thump from the landing gear, followed by vibration — a suspected tire burst. Past V1 you are committed, so we continued the takeoff and climbed away normally.
Airborne, we kept the problem practical. We told ATC, and asked the tower to inspect the runway for debris — our missing tire was now someone else's FOD. We left the gear down while we discussed it, then decided with our company: return for a landing with the fire service standing by, on the longest runway, planning a long and gentle touchdown to be kind to the remaining tires.
The landing was uneventful, and we stopped straight ahead for a wheel inspection before taxiing in slowly. One tire was gone; nothing else was hurt. Past V1, the decision makes itself — everything after that is just good housekeeping.
Two things stood out on the ground side. The runway inspection happened immediately after our call — and it mattered, because they did find rubber on the runway, which would have met the next departure at speed. And the return was set up without any rush: longest runway, fire service in place, and no questions during the final approach.
If anything, the inspection result could have come to us as well as to the airport — knowing how much tire was on the runway would have told us how much was left on the aircraft. We asked, and got the answer; it would have been better volunteered. Still, the response was quick where it counted.
3. Mock Test 2 — Phone Fire in the Cabin
Situation: In the cruise, a passenger's phone slipped into the seat mechanism and was crushed when the seat reclined. It began to smoke. Describe what happened and how you handled it.
힌트: slipped into the seat and was crushed / began to smoke / a lithium battery fire / moved the passengers away / cooled it with water / did not try to pick it up at first / a containment bag / no diversion needed? or divert? / paramedics — anyone with smoke inhalation?
In the cruise, the purser reported smoke from a seat row: a passenger's phone had slipped into the seat mechanism and been crushed when the seat reclined. A crushed lithium battery can catch fire quickly, so the crew treated it as a fire from the first second.
They moved the passengers away, and instead of grabbing the phone, they poured water on it to cool the battery — that is the trained response, because a burning battery reignites no matter how it looks. Once it was cool, it went into the containment bag with more water. We contacted our company, and since the smoke had stopped and nothing else was involved, the decision was to continue, with the cabin crew watching the bag for the rest of the flight.
Nobody needed medical help, and we landed on schedule. The phone was the emergency — the training is why it stayed a small one.
Honestly, this was a cabin story more than an ATC story, and that is worth saying in the answer. We told the controller what had happened and that no assistance was needed; he confirmed it, noted it, and left us alone — which was exactly right. Not adding help nobody asked for is also good controlling.
The one improvement sits with us as an industry: seat-crush phone fires are common enough that the warning belongs in every pre-flight announcement — "if your phone slips into the seat, do not move the seat, call us." Prevention beats the best-poured water. On the day, though, everyone did their part and the flight never felt the fire.
4. What the Examiner Is Listening For
| 어휘 | 배운 표현의 회수 — thump, committed, containment bag, fire service standing by |
5. Self-Check
- 조치마다 이유를 한 구절씩 붙였다 (past V1 you are committed / a crushed battery reignites).
6. Shadowing — Exam-Ready 10
- Just after V1, we felt a strong thump from the landing gear.
- Past V1, you are committed — we continued the takeoff.
- We asked the tower to inspect the runway for debris.
- We planned a long, gentle landing with the fire service standing by.
- The crew treated it as a fire from the first second.
- They cooled the battery with water instead of grabbing it.
- It went into the containment bag once it was cool.
- We told ATC that no assistance was needed.
- The question was whether to continue or to divert — and the facts answered it.
- The training is why a small emergency stayed small.
