1. Final Simulation — The Situation
Situation: At night, an elderly passenger developed slurred speech and weakness on one side — signs of a possible stroke. At the same time, your destination was reporting fog, with visibility below your minima. Describe what happened and how you handled it.
힌트: slurred speech and weakness on one side / a possible stroke / time matters with a stroke / below our minima / the choice was never destination — it was which alternate / weather above minima and a major hospital / paramedics at the gate / passed the symptoms and the onset time ahead.
2. Model Answer — Q1
At night in the cruise, the purser reported an elderly passenger with slurred speech and weakness down one side — the classic signs of a stroke, where every minute matters. A doctor on board answered the PA, and our medical advice service said what we already felt: hospital, as fast as possible.
The twist was the weather. Our destination was reporting fog below our minima, so the choice was never destination versus alternate — it was which alternate. We asked ATC for the nearest suitable airport with weather above minima and a major hospital, and with our company they converged on one about twenty-five minutes away. We declared PAN-PAN, took the priority descent, and passed the symptoms and the onset time ahead, because stroke treatment depends on when it started.
The paramedics boarded first and took him straight to hospital, inside the time window. The weather chose the airport, the patient chose the speed — our job was to say both clearly on the radio and let the system work.
3. Model Answer — Q2
"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"
The merge is what impressed me. Our question had two halves — weather above minima, and a hospital that could take a stroke — and the controller answered his half instantly, reading us the weather at three alternates while our company matched the hospitals. Two constraints, two organizations, one answer inside a few minutes, and the priority descent came without a single extra question.
If anything, the two halves of that answer lived in two different places — ATC held the weather, our company held the medical picture — and we were the bridge between them. A shared note on which airports have major hospitals would let a controller answer the whole question alone. Still, the merge took minutes, and minutes were exactly what the patient had.
- "Why didn't you land at the destination and let an ambulance take him?" → Because we could not land there at all — the fog was below our minima. The destination was never one of the options; the real choice was which alternate served the patient best.
- "What exactly did you pass ahead, and why the onset time?" → The symptoms, what the doctor on board had done, and when it started — because stroke treatment works inside a time window, and the hospital plans around that clock, not ours.
- "Looking back, what mattered most in this situation?" → Speaking early and clearly. The moment both problems were on the radio, four other people started solving them with us — the controller, the company, the doctor, and the hospital.
5. The 60-Day Map
| Phase | Day | 한 줄 정석 |
|---|---|---|
(HL123 = Hotel Lima One Two Three).
7. Shadowing — The Course in 10 Sentences
- Our first priority was to fly the aircraft.
- We declared MAYDAY and told ATC exactly what we needed.
- Rather than gamble on the destination, we decided to divert.
- When in doubt, stop and ask.
- A clearance is permission, not an order.
- Pilots do not decide the treatment — they decide the transport.
- The question was whether to continue or to divert.
- After any failure, re-ask every question downstream.
- Fuel wins every argument.
- Say it early, say it clearly, and let the system work with you.
What's Next
