1. Scenario
I was the First Officer of HL123, taxiing out for departure with the flight documents still fresh in my mind.
Ground cleared us to the runway via taxiway Bravo. That caught my attention, because our briefing pack held an active NOTAM: Bravo was closed for pavement work until five in the evening. The clearance and the paper could not both be right.
Before the intersection where Bravo began, we slowed and queried it: "Ground, HL123 — confirm Bravo is open? We hold a NOTAM saying it's closed for works." The controller answered without any argument — he offered us an alternative straight away, "Taxi via Charlie if you prefer," and said he would check with airport operations in the meantime.
We took Charlie, which cost us nothing, and a minute later he came back with the full answer: the work had finished ahead of schedule, the closure had been lifted at eight that morning, and a cancellation NOTAM had been issued — after our briefing pack was printed. Both sides had been "right" for their own moment in time.
We departed normally, and we passed the update to our company so the next crew would brief from current information.
2. At a Glance
English — Ground cleared us via taxiway Bravo, but our briefing pack held an active NOTAM closing Bravo for pavement work. Instead of taxiing into a conflict, we slowed and asked. The controller offered an alternative route via Charlie on the spot, checked with airport operations, and came back with the answer: the work had finished early and the closure had been lifted that morning — after our pack was printed. The rule: when your paper and the clearance disagree, ask before you enter. Old information is not wrong information until someone checks.

오늘의 표현 포인트 — "Our information said ____, so we asked before ____."
7. Common Mistakes → Better Phrasing
|---|---|
| The paper said no. | We held an active NOTAM closing the taxiway. |
| ATC and NOTAM is different. | The clearance and our information disagreed. |
| Is Bravo OK? | "Confirm Bravo is open? We hold a NOTAM saying it's closed." |
| ATC changed the way. | The routing was amended to Charlie. |
| The NOTAM was wrong. | The closure had been lifted after our pack was printed. |
| We told our company later. | We passed the update to our company for the next crew. |
8. Grammar Point — 관계부사 where / when
- The taxiway where the work was in progress had reopened.
- Eight o'clock was the time when the closure was lifted.
- We slowed before the intersection where Bravo began.
9. Model Answer — Q1
"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."
We were taxiing out for departure when ground cleared us to the runway via taxiway Bravo. That caught my attention, because our briefing pack held an active NOTAM: Bravo was closed for pavement work until the evening. The clearance and the paper could not both be right.
We slowed before the intersection where Bravo began and queried it — "Confirm Bravo is open? We hold a NOTAM saying it's closed for works." The controller didn't argue at all. He offered us an alternative straight away, "Taxi via Charlie if you prefer," and checked with airport operations while we taxied.
A minute later he came back with the full answer: the work had finished ahead of schedule, the closure had been lifted at eight that morning, and the cancellation NOTAM had come out after our pack was printed. Both sides had been right for their own moment in time.
We departed normally and passed the update to our company, so the next crew would brief from current information. Between two versions of the truth, the only safe move is to ask before you enter.
10. Model Answer — Q2
"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"
I'll be honest — this one impressed me. What made it good was the order of his actions: the alternative route came first, so nobody sat waiting on a busy taxiway, and the fact-checking with airport operations ran in the background. He also came back with the full answer — when the closure was lifted and why our paper missed it — instead of a bare "Bravo is open." That answer turned a disagreement into a briefing point we could pass on.
If there is something to improve, it happened before he ever spoke: Bravo had reopened hours earlier, and crews briefing off older packs were always going to query it. A short proactive line when issuing the route — "Bravo is open again as of eight" — would have answered the question before anyone had to ask it. A small point — the rest of his work was clean.
11. Follow-up Q&A
- What is a NOTAM? → A notice to airmen — the official publication for temporary changes: closures, unserviceable aids, works, hazards.
- How can the crew and ATC hold different information at the same time? → Briefing packs are printed at one moment; the field keeps changing after that. The controller works from live status, the crew from paperwork printed hours earlier.
- Why did you accept Charlie instead of waiting for the check on Bravo? → Charlie cost nothing and kept us moving. Waiting only makes sense when there is no clean alternative.
- What if the controller had insisted on Bravo with no alternative? → We would have held position until the status was confirmed. A crew may always decline a routing they cannot verify as safe.
