1. Scenario
I was the First Officer of HL123, a twin-engine aircraft, holding near our destination because of weather.
While we were holding, our fuel kept decreasing, and we estimated that we could not accept much more delay. We still had more than our final reserve, but the margin was getting small.
At that point we declared MINIMUM FUEL to ATC. This is an advisory — it tells ATC that we are committed to landing at this airport and cannot accept any undue delay. It is not yet an emergency.
ATC understood and gave us priority for the approach, with no further holding. We calculated that we had enough fuel to land with our reserves intact. If the delay had continued and our fuel had dropped below the final reserve, we would have declared MAYDAY FUEL, which is an emergency.
In the end, we landed with our final reserve still on board.
(At a glance)
English — Holding for weather, our fuel kept dropping and we could not accept much more delay. So we declared MINIMUM FUEL — an advisory that tells ATC we are committed to land here and cannot take any undue delay. It is not an emergency. If our usable fuel on landing would fall below the final reserve, then we would declare MAYDAY FUEL, which is an emergency and gives priority. We landed with our reserves intact.

(Sentence Frames)
- While we were holding, our fuel ____. → While we were holding, our fuel kept decreasing.
- We estimated that we could not accept ____. → … could not accept much more delay.
- We declared MINIMUM FUEL, which means ____. → … which means we are committed to land here and cannot take undue delay.
- We had enough fuel to ____. → We had enough fuel to land with our reserves.
- If our fuel had dropped below ____, we would have declared ____. → … below the final reserve, we would have declared MAYDAY FUEL.
오늘의 표현 포인트 — "enough fuel to ____" / "less than the final reserve."
|---|---|
| We don't have much fuel, emergency! | We declared MINIMUM FUEL — an advisory, not yet an emergency. |
| Our fuel is going low. | The fuel kept decreasing and the margin was getting small. |
| We can't wait more. | We could not accept any more delay. |
| Fuel is below the limit, mayday. | If fuel would be below the final reserve, we declare MAYDAY FUEL. |
| We have fuel to land. | We had enough fuel to land with our reserves. |
| Give us first. | We requested priority for the approach. |
8. 오늘의 문법 포인트 — 비교·정도: less than / enough to
- We had enough fuel to land with our reserves.
- Our fuel was getting lower than we wanted. (~
- We would have less than the final reserve. (~
- We could take no more delay.
핵심: 충분 "enough … to …", 비교 "lower / less than …", 한계 "no more …".
9. Model Answer — Q1
"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."
We were holding near our destination because of weather, and while we were holding our fuel kept decreasing. We still had more than our final reserve, but the margin was getting small, and we estimated that we could not accept much more delay.
At that point we declared MINIMUM FUEL to ATC. That is an advisory: it tells them we are committed to landing at this airport and cannot accept any undue delay. It is not an emergency yet, but it makes our situation clear.
The key was using the right term at the right time, so ATC knew exactly how urgent our fuel was.
10. Model Answer — Q2
"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"
To be honest, ATC handled it reasonably well, but I think they could have been a little more proactive. Once we declared MINIMUM FUEL, they gave us priority and stopped the holding, which was exactly what we needed.
The one thing I would change is the earlier holding. We were held for quite a while with no information about how long it would last, and that is what made our fuel tight. If they had given us an expected delay sooner, we could have made our decision earlier. Still, once we spoke up, their response was quick and helpful.
11. Follow-up Q&A
- What is the difference between MINIMUM FUEL and MAYDAY FUEL? → MINIMUM FUEL is an advisory: we are committed to land here and cannot accept undue delay. MAYDAY FUEL is an emergency: our usable fuel on landing would be below the final reserve.
- Is MINIMUM FUEL a request for priority? → Not directly. It is information for ATC. But it tells them we cannot take more delay, so they usually help.
- When would you upgrade to MAYDAY FUEL? → As soon as I calculate that we will land with less than the final reserve, I declare MAYDAY FUEL to get an emergency priority.
- How can you avoid this situation? → By asking for expected delays early, deciding to divert in good time, and watching the fuel margin during holding.
