1. Scenario
I was the First Officer of HL123, a twin-engine aircraft, after landing at our destination.
We had landed slightly long and used heavy braking to stop within the remaining runway. During the rollout, our brake temperatures rose very quickly, and after we vacated the runway the brakes had clearly overheated.
We stopped the aircraft clear of other traffic and did not continue taxiing, because taxiing would have added more heat. Hot brakes can melt the fuse plugs, which deflate the tires, and in some cases they can start a wheel fire, so we treated the situation carefully.
We informed ATC, requested the fire services to stand by and inspect the wheels, and asked the ground crew to use wheel chocks rather than rely on the parking brake. We then allowed the brakes to cool and told the passengers to expect a short delay.
Once the brakes had cooled and the wheels had been inspected, we taxied slowly to the gate.
(At a glance)
English — After a long landing with heavy braking, our brakes overheated. Hot brakes can melt the fuse plugs and even start a wheel fire, so the priority is to stop clear of traffic, let the brakes cool, and avoid adding more heat. The flow is: vacate and stop clear → request the fire services to stand by and inspect → use wheel chocks and allow the brakes to cool → expect a delay → taxi only once the brakes have cooled. This is usually handled as a precaution, not a full emergency.

(Sentence Frames)
- After a ____ landing, our brakes ____ed. → After a long landing, our brakes overheated.
- We vacated the runway and stopped clear of ____. → … clear of other traffic.
- We requested the fire services to ____. → … to stand by and inspect the wheels.
- We avoided ____ing, because ____. → We avoided taxiing, because it would add more heat.
- Once the brakes had cooled, we ____. → Once the brakes had cooled, we taxied to the gate.
오늘의 표현 포인트 — "We avoided ____ing, because it would ____."
|---|---|
| The brakes were too hot. | The brakes overheated / the brake temperatures were very high. |
| We went out of the runway. | We vacated the runway. |
| We waited for the brakes to be cold. | We allowed the brakes to cool. |
| We called the firemen to come. | We requested the fire services to stand by. |
| We put blocks on the wheels. | We used wheel chocks. |
| We said sorry for being late. | We told the passengers to expect a short delay. |
- The brakes have overheated, so we can't taxi yet.
- The wheels have been inspected, so we're ready to move.
- We have stopped clear of other traffic.
로 씁니다 — "the brakes had overheated, so we stopped."
9. Model Answer — Q1
"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."
After we landed, our brakes overheated. We'd landed slightly long and used heavy braking to stop in time, and during the rollout the brake temperatures rose very quickly.
After we vacated the runway, the brakes were clearly too hot, so we stopped clear of other traffic and didn't taxi any further, because taxiing would only add more heat. Hot brakes can melt the fuse plugs and even start a wheel fire, so we treated it carefully.
We told ATC what was happening, asked the fire services to stand by and check the wheels, and asked the ground crew to use chocks rather than rely on the parking brake. We then let the brakes cool and told the passengers to expect a short delay.
Once the brakes had cooled and the wheels were checked, we taxied slowly to the gate. By stopping clear and letting the brakes cool, we kept everyone safe.
10. Model Answer — Q2
"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"
Honestly, ATC and the ground crew were very helpful. After we reported the hot brakes, they kept the taxiway clear and set up the fire services, and they gave us the time we needed to cool the brakes without any pressure.
One thing they could improve is offering a remote stand or a tug earlier, which would clear the taxiway sooner and disturb less traffic. But all in all, their patience helped us handle the delay safely.
11. Follow-up Q&A
- Why didn't you taxi straight to the gate? → Taxiing would add more heat to brakes that were already very hot, so we stopped and let them cool first.
- Why did you ask for the fire services? → Hot brakes can cause a wheel fire or a tire/fuse-plug failure, so we wanted them standing by as a precaution.
- Why use chocks instead of the parking brake? → Setting the parking brake on very hot brakes can trap heat, so chocks let the brakes cool more safely. Ground crew should also approach the wheels from the front or rear, not the sides, because of the risk of a tire or fuse-plug burst.
- Was this an emergency? → Not necessarily — we handled it as a precaution. We would have declared an emergency if there had been a wheel fire.
