1. Scenario
I was the First Officer of HL123, a twin-engine aircraft climbing through cloud after departure.
While we were climbing, we entered an area of icing, and ice began to accumulate on the wings. We selected the anti-ice system on, but the wing anti-ice failed and would not work.
Without working wing anti-ice, ice can build up and affect lift and handling, so our priority was to get out of the icing quickly. We told ATC about the failure and asked for an immediate descent to a warmer altitude, below the freezing level. There was traffic two thousand feet below us, so ATC could not give us the full descent at once — they gave us an intermediate level first, then cleared us lower as soon as the traffic was clear, and offered us a heading toward an area with less cloud.
As we descended, the ice gradually melted and we left the icing conditions. We monitored the aircraft carefully, and once we were clear of icing, the handling was normal again.
We continued the flight and informed our company about the failure for maintenance after landing.
2. At a Glance
English — While climbing through cloud, we entered icing and ice started to accumulate on the wings. We selected anti-ice on, but the wing anti-ice failed. Because ice can affect lift and handling, the priority is to leave the icing — so we told ATC and requested a lower, warmer altitude. As we descended, the ice melted and we got clear. If the icing had got worse, we would have declared a PAN-PAN.

6. Sentence Frames
- While we were ____ing, we entered ____. → While we were climbing, we entered an area of icing.
- We selected ____ on, but it failed. → We selected the anti-ice on, but the wing anti-ice failed.
- Because ____ can ____, our priority was to ____. → Because ice can affect handling, our priority was to leave the icing.
- We requested ____ because of ____. → We requested a lower altitude because of the icing.
- If ____ had got worse, we would have ____. → If the icing had got worse, we would have declared a PAN-PAN.
오늘의 표현 포인트 — "If ____ had got worse, we would have ____."
7. Common Mistakes → Better Phrasing
|---|---|
| There was ice on the plane. | Ice accumulated on the wings. |
| We opened the anti-ice. | We selected the anti-ice on. |
| The anti-ice was broken. | The wing anti-ice failed. |
| We went down to escape ice. | We descended to a warmer altitude to leave the icing. |
| The ice is dangerous for flying. | Ice can affect lift and handling. |
| We got out of the cloud. | We got clear of the icing. |
8. Grammar Point — Conditionals (if / when)
"어떤 조건이면 어떻게 한다/했을 것이다"는 if / when으로 말합니다. Task C의 판단 설명에 딱 맞아요.
- When we enter icing, we select the anti-ice on.
- If the icing gets worse, we will leave the area.
- If the icing had got worse, we would have declared a PAN-PAN.
핵심 세 가지: 일반(when + 현재), 실제 가능성(if + 현재 → will), 안 일어난 가정(if + had p.p. → would have p.p.).
9. Model Answer — Q1
"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."
While we were climbing through cloud, we entered an area of icing, and ice began to accumulate on the wings. We selected the anti-ice on, but the wing anti-ice failed and would not work.
Without working wing anti-ice, ice can affect lift and handling, so our priority was to get out of the icing quickly. We told ATC about the failure and asked for an immediate descent to a warmer altitude. There was traffic two thousand feet below us, so ATC gave us an intermediate level first and then cleared us lower as soon as that traffic was clear, along with a heading toward an area with less cloud.
As we descended, the ice gradually melted and we got clear of the icing. We monitored the handling the whole time, and once we were clear it felt normal again. If the icing had got worse, we would have declared a PAN-PAN.
So the problem was a wing anti-ice failure in icing conditions. By leaving the icing quickly and keeping ATC informed, we handled it safely, and we reported the failure to our company for maintenance.
10. Model Answer — Q2
"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"
I think ATC handled it well. There was traffic below us, so they couldn't give us the whole descent at once, but they gave us an intermediate level immediately and then cleared us lower the moment the traffic was clear — they clearly understood the urgency. They also gave us a heading toward an area with less cloud, so we got clear faster.
Could anything have been better? Maybe information on where the icing layer ended, so we could plan the descent. But in this case they were quick and flexible, and that made it easy to manage.
11. Follow-up Q&A
- Why is icing dangerous without anti-ice? → Ice changes the shape of the wing, so it can reduce lift and affect handling, and in bad cases it can lead to a stall.
- Why did you choose to descend? → Below the freezing level the air is warmer, so the ice melts and we leave the icing conditions.
- Why did the heading toward less cloud help? → Less cloud means less moisture, so the ice stops building while you descend to warmer air.
- What did you do after landing? → We reported the anti-ice failure to our company so maintenance could check the system.
