1. Scenario

I was the First Officer of HL123 and the Pilot Flying, on final approach in gusty conditions near a thunderstorm.

Just before landing, we got a windshear warning, and our airspeed dropped suddenly. The windshear could have pushed us below the glidepath, so there was no time to hesitate.

I immediately applied maximum thrust and carried out the windshear escape maneuver. I followed the flight director and kept the wings level, and I did not change the configuration until we were clear.

We climbed away safely and told ATC we were going around because of windshear. We asked for vectors to hold clear of the cell and said we would not accept another approach until the gust front had moved through; ATC gave us a holding area upwind and re-sequenced us behind the following traffic. We also reported the windshear so those aircraft would be warned.

After that, we held clear of the weather, waited for conditions to improve, and made a normal approach and landing.

2. At a Glance

English — On final in gusty conditions, we got a windshear warning and the airspeed dropped. Windshear can push you below the path or even into the ground, so the response is immediate: maximum thrust, fly the escape maneuver, follow the flight director, and do not change the configuration until clear. We went around, reported the windshear, waited for it to improve, and then landed normally.

  • Just before landing, we got a ____. → Just before landing, we got a windshear warning.
  • The ____ could have ____, so there was no time to hesitate. → The windshear could have pushed us below the glidepath, so there was no time to hesitate.

The windshear could have pushed us below the glidepath."

The wind suddenly changed. We got a windshear warning and the airspeed dropped suddenly.
We pushed the power fully. We applied maximum thrust.
We escaped the windshear. We carried out the windshear escape maneuver.
We didn't touch the gear or flaps. We did not change the configuration until clear.
We went up again. We went around because of windshear.
We told ATC about the wind.We reported the windshear to ATC.

8. Grammar Point — Possibility & Risk (could / might)

  • The windshear could have pushed us below the glidepath.
  • If we had continued, we might have lost too much airspeed.
  • A gust could put us close to a stall.

핵심: could / might + 동사원형 = 현재·미래 가능성, could have / might have + p.p.

9. Model Answer — Q1

"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."

I was the Pilot Flying on final approach, in gusty conditions near a thunderstorm. Just before landing, we got a windshear warning, and our airspeed dropped suddenly. The windshear could have pushed us below the glidepath, so there was no time to hesitate.

I immediately applied maximum thrust and carried out the windshear escape maneuver. I followed the flight director, kept the wings level, and did not change the configuration until we were clear.

We climbed away safely and told ATC we were going around because of windshear. We asked for vectors to hold clear of the cell and said we wouldn't take another approach until the gust front had passed; ATC gave us a holding area and re-sequenced us behind the traffic that had been following. We also reported the windshear so those aircraft would be warned.

After that, we held clear of the weather, waited for the conditions to improve, and made a normal approach and landing. What mattered most was reacting immediately and flying the escape maneuver without delay.

10. Model Answer — Q2

"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"

Frankly, ATC made a hard approach easier. When we called the go-around for windshear, they gave us climb instructions and a clear path straight away, and they didn't crowd us with questions while we flew the escape. When we said we wouldn't re-approach until the gust front had moved through, they gave us a holding area upwind and re-sequenced us without any fuss, and passed our windshear report to the following aircraft.

If I had one request, it would be the numbers — the gust values and when the front was expected to pass — so we could judge the wait better. Once we went around, though, their support was quick and let us focus on flying.

11. Follow-up Q&A

  1. Why react immediately to windshear? → Windshear can quickly take away airspeed and push you below the path, so an immediate escape maneuver is the only safe response.
  2. Why not change the configuration during the escape? → Changing gear or flaps can reduce performance at the worst moment, so we keep the configuration until we are clear.
  3. Why report the windshear? → So ATC and the following traffic are warned and can avoid or prepare for it.
  4. When did you try to land again? → After we held clear and the conditions improved, we set up for a normal approach.
