Go-around due to traffic
"막 착륙하려던 참에 ~했다"를 말하니, 문법은 be about to … when 이에요.
1. Scenario
I was the First Officer of HL123 and the Pilot Flying, on short final to land.
We were about to land when the tower told us to go around, because the preceding aircraft had not vacated the runway in time. A go-around is a normal procedure, so we carried it out straight away.
I applied go-around thrust, set the go-around attitude, and called "going around." We followed the missed approach procedure — we climbed, retracted the gear and the flaps on schedule, and flew the published track.
We told ATC we were going around due to traffic, and asked to stay in the pattern for a tight circuit rather than a long re-vector, to save time and fuel. They gave us a short left downwind and slotted us in as number one for the next approach.
We set up again, flew a normal approach, and landed safely on the second attempt.
2. At a Glance
English — On short final, the preceding aircraft had not vacated, so the tower told us to go around. A go-around is a standard procedure, not an emergency — you carry it out cleanly: go-around thrust, climb, configure on schedule, and fly the missed approach. Then ATC re-sequences you for another approach. The key is doing it without hesitation when the approach is not safe to continue.

8. Grammar Point — Interrupted Moment (be about to … when)
"막 ~하려던 참에 ~한 일이 일어났다"는 be about to + 동사원형 … when …
- We were about to land when the tower told us to go around.
- I was about to flare when the warning sounded.
- We were about to touch down when ATC called the go-around.
핵심: was/were about to + 동사원형 (막 ~하려던 참) + when + 갑작스러운 사건.
9. Model Answer — Q1
"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."
I was on short final to land. We were about to land when the tower told us to go around, because the preceding aircraft had not vacated the runway in time. A go-around is a normal procedure, so we carried it out straight away.
I applied go-around thrust, set the go-around attitude, and called "going around." We followed the missed approach procedure — we climbed, retracted the gear and flaps on schedule, and flew the published track.
What mattered was going around without hesitation the moment it was clear the approach could not continue.
10. Model Answer — Q2
"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"
I genuinely think ATC called it right. They called the go-around in good time rather than leaving it too late, and when we asked to stay in the pattern instead of a long re-vector, they gave us a tight left downwind and made us number one, so the second approach was quick and saved fuel. They also kept the other traffic informed.
Honestly, the root fix is spacing — a bigger gap on the approach would have given the preceding aircraft time to vacate. Once the go-around was needed, though, their instructions were clear and well-timed.
11. Follow-up Q&A
- Is a go-around an emergency? → No, it is a normal, safe procedure. We use it whenever the approach is not safe to continue.
- Why go around for traffic on the runway? → We cannot land until the runway is clear, so we go around rather than risk landing on an occupied runway.
- What are the first actions of a go-around? → Apply go-around thrust, set the climb attitude, call "going around," and configure the aircraft on schedule.
- What did ATC do after the go-around? → They kept us in a tight left-hand pattern and made us number one for the next approach.
