1. Scenario
I was the First Officer of HL123 and the Pilot Flying, landing on a runway covered with standing water after heavy rain.
After touchdown, the aircraft started to hydroplane. The tires were skimming on the water, so the braking and the nosewheel steering were much less effective. The runway was too wet to brake normally.
I kept the aircraft straight with rudder, used reverse thrust, and let the anti-skid system do the braking instead of pressing the brakes hard. We used most of the runway, but we stayed on the centreline and slowed down safely.
Before we landed, we had asked the tower for the latest wind and runway condition; they reported the runway wet, with braking action medium from the previous aircraft, so we planned for a long rollout and relied on the anti-skid. After we vacated, we reported the braking action as poor — worse than the medium we'd been given — so ATC could pass the more cautious condition to the following aircraft.
We taxied carefully to the gate, and the runway was checked before the next landing.
2. At a Glance
English — Landing on a runway with standing water, the aircraft hydroplaned — the tires skimmed on the water, so braking and steering were poor. The runway was too wet to brake normally. The response is to keep straight with rudder, use reverse thrust, and let the anti-skid work rather than braking hard. Afterwards, we report the braking action (poor / medium / good) so the next aircraft knows the runway condition.

- The water was too deep to keep good steering.
- It was too late to go around once we had touched down.
9. Model Answer — Q1
"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."
I was landing on a runway covered with standing water after heavy rain. After touchdown, the aircraft started to hydroplane. The tires were skimming on the water, so the braking and the nosewheel steering were much less effective — the runway was too wet to brake normally.
I kept the aircraft straight with rudder and used reverse thrust. Instead of pressing the brakes hard, I let the anti-skid system do the braking, so the wheels would not lock.
The key was keeping directional control and not braking too hard on the water.
10. Model Answer — Q2
"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"
For the most part, ATC stayed ahead of the situation. Before landing they gave us the latest wind and the previous aircraft's braking report, and afterwards they accepted our poorer braking-action report straight away and passed it to the following traffic — exactly what helps on a wet runway. They also gave us time to vacate carefully instead of rushing us off.
If I could change one thing, after that much heavy rain I would have liked the tower to get a fresh runway check, rather than pass on an older report. Even so, once we landed and reported, they acted on it quickly.
11. Follow-up Q&A
- Why not brake hard when hydroplaning? → Hard braking can lock the wheels on the water, so we let the anti-skid work and use reverse thrust instead.
- How do you keep control when hydroplaning? → Mainly with rudder for directional control, staying on the centreline until the wheels grip again.
- Why report the braking action? → So ATC and the following aircraft know the runway is poor and can plan for a longer landing or even divert.
- What are the braking-action terms? → Good, medium, and poor — a simple way to tell ATC how the runway is behaving.
