1. Phase 2 at a Glance
English — Phase 2 was about weather and flight operations: turbulence, windshear, microburst, CB avoidance, volcanic ash, bird strike, hydroplaning, crosswind limits, low-visibility taxi, runway contamination, go-around, diversion, and holding with limited fuel. The thread through all of them is judgment — continue, avoid, delay, divert, or go around — and saying clearly why you chose it.
2. Must-Know Expressions

6. Integrated Practice — Try It Yourself First
Situation: On approach, the weather was deteriorating — gusty winds, a thunderstorm cell moving over the field, and the visibility dropping. Describe what happened and how you handled it.
힌트(이미 배운 표현): the weather was deteriorating / a thunderstorm cell over the field / gusty, near our crosswind limit / we carried out a go-around / we held clear of the weather / rather than gamble on the approach / we decided to divert / with our reserves intact.
On approach, the weather was deteriorating quickly. The wind was gusty and close to our crosswind limit, a thunderstorm cell was moving over the field, and the visibility was dropping. It was not safe to continue, so we carried out a go-around.
We climbed away, told ATC we were going around due to the weather, and asked to hold at a fix upwind of the cell with an expected-approach time, so we could judge our fuel. They gave us the hold and the time, and updated us as the cell tracked across the field. We assessed the situation: not only the crosswind but also the storm and the visibility were against us, and the expected delay would eat into the fuel we needed.
Rather than gamble on the approach, we decided to divert to our alternate, where the weather was good, while we still had the fuel. We coordinated with dispatch, flew a normal approach at the alternate, and landed safely with our reserves intact.
I'd say ATC stayed ahead of the weather with us. They gave us clear go-around instructions, a holding fix upwind of the storm with an expected-approach time, and updates as the cell moved, so we could judge our fuel. And when the delay proved too long and we decided to divert, they had the clearance to the alternate ready. With the weather changing fast, that quick support kept our workload down.
The improvement I'd ask for is earlier information on how fast the weather was moving in, so we could have planned the diversion sooner. On the whole, though, their handling let us make a safe decision in good time.
7. Self-Check
- continue / avoid / delay / divert / go around
