Day 19 · Phase 2 — Weather & Flight Operations

CB avoidance en route

문법은 이유를 명사로 붙이는 due to / because of 입니다.

1. Scenario

I was the First Officer of HL123, in the cruise on an oceanic route.

On the weather radar, we detected a large line of CB cells building up ahead, right on our track. Flying through a thunderstorm can cause severe turbulence, hail, and icing, so we needed to go around it.

We asked ATC for a deviation to the left of track first, but that side was blocked by opposite-direction traffic. So we requested right instead, and ATC approved up to twenty miles right of track; we turned and stayed well clear of the cells.

We kept the cells on the radar and gave the controller updates as we went. We avoided the worst of the weather by a safe margin.

Once we were past the line, we returned to our track and continued the flight normally.

2. At a Glance

English — En route we saw a line of thunderstorm (CB) cells on the radar, right on our track. Flying through a CB means severe turbulence, hail, and icing, so we avoid it by a good margin. The flow is: request a deviation left or right of track due to weather, stay well clear of the cells, keep ATC updated, and return to track once clear. It is about planning ahead and coordinating, not reacting at the last minute.

6. Sentence Frames

  • On the weather radar, we detected ____. → On the weather radar, we detected a line of CB cells ahead.
  • Flying through ____ can cause ____, so we ____. → Flying through a thunderstorm can cause severe turbulence, so we went around it.
  • We requested a deviation ____ due to weather. → We requested a deviation to the right of track due to weather.
  • We stayed well clear of ____ and kept ATC updated. → We stayed well clear of the cells and kept ATC updated.
  • Once we were past ____, we returned to track. → Once we were past the line, we returned to track.

We requested a deviation to the right of track due to weather."

7. Common Mistakes → Better Phrasing

We saw storms on the radar. We detected CB cells on the weather radar.
We turned to miss the storm. We deviated to the right of track.
We asked to go around the weather. We requested a deviation due to weather.
We stayed far from the clouds. We stayed well clear of the cells by a safe margin.
We told ATC where we were going. We kept ATC updated on our deviation.
We went back to our way.We returned to track once clear.

8. Grammar Point — Reason with a Noun (due to / because of)

이유를 명사로 붙일 때는 due to / because of를 씁니다. (because + 절과 구분)

  • We requested a deviation due to weather.
  • We turned right because of the line of cells.
  • The delay was due to the thunderstorms on the route.

핵심: due to / because of + 명사(구). 절을 붙일 땐 because + 주어 + 동사("because the weather was bad").

9. Model Answer — Q1

"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."

In the cruise on an oceanic route, we detected a large line of CB cells on the weather radar, right on our track.

We kept the cells on the radar and gave the controller updates as we went, so they always knew where we were. We avoided the worst of the weather by a safe margin.

Once we were past the line, we returned to our track and continued normally. It worked because we used the radar early, asked for the deviation in good time, and kept ATC in the picture.

10. Model Answer — Q2

"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"

I have to say, ATC made it feel easy. Our first choice, deviating left, was blocked by opposite-direction traffic, but when we asked for right they approved twenty miles without any delay — a generous margin, so we never had to argue for room near the cells. They also coordinated with other traffic, so our deviation caused no conflicts.

My one note: telling us what the aircraft ahead were doing about the line would have helped us pick our side sooner. That said, their quick approval and clear coordination made the avoidance easy.

11. Follow-up Q&A

  1. Why not fly through the gap between cells? → Gaps can close quickly and still contain turbulence and hail, so we stay well clear with a safe margin.
  2. How do you decide which side to deviate? → We assess the radar picture and the wind, and we choose the side with more clearance and a smoother return to track.
  3. Why keep ATC updated? → So they know our position and can keep other traffic clear while we are off track.
  4. What is the danger of a CB? → Severe turbulence, hail, icing, and lightning, which can damage the aircraft and injure people.
