Day 23 · Phase 2 — Weather & Flight Operations

Crosswind exceeding limitation

1. Scenario

I was the Captain of HL123, lined up and ready for departure, when the wind picked up.

The tower gave us the latest wind, and the crosswind component was now above our aircraft's limit, with strong gusts. Taking off in an out-of-limits crosswind is not safe, so we decided not to go.

We told ATC we were unable to depart due to the crosswind, and we held our position rather than take off. We then asked whether runway 34, which was more into the wind, was available instead.

Runway 34 was in use for arrivals and not free at that time, so we taxied clear of the departure runway and waited for the wind to ease. We monitored the wind reports and briefed for the conditions.

About twenty minutes later, the gusts dropped back within our limit, and we departed safely.

2. At a Glance

English — Lined up for takeoff, the crosswind went above our aircraft's limit with strong gusts. The rule is simple: do not exceed the limit. So we did not take off — we held position, asked for a runway more into the wind, and when that was not available, we waited for the wind to ease. Once the crosswind was back within limits, we departed. It is a clear safety decision, not something to push.

6. Sentence Frames

  • The crosswind was now above our ____, with strong gusts. → … above our aircraft's limit, with strong gusts.
  • Taking off in ____ is not safe, so we decided not to go. → … in an out-of-limits crosswind is not safe, so we decided not to go.
  • We held our position rather than ____. → We held our position rather than take off.
  • We asked whether ____ was available. → … whether a different runway, more into the wind, was available.
  • Once ____, we departed safely. → Once the crosswind was back within limits, we departed safely.

We held our position rather than take off."

7. Common Mistakes → Better Phrasing

The side wind was too strong. The crosswind exceeded our limit.
We didn't take off.We decided not to take off / held our position.
We told ATC we can't go.We told ATC we were unable to depart due to the crosswind.
We asked for another runway. We requested a runway more into the wind.
We waited and didn't take off.We held our position rather than take off.
The wind became okay. The crosswind came back within limits.

8. Grammar Point — Choice & Contrast (rather than)

  • We held our position rather than take off in the gusts.
  • We waited rather than push an out-of-limits departure.
  • We chose to delay rather than risk the crosswind.

A rather than B = "B 대신 A를 택했다".

9. Model Answer — Q1

"What happened to your aircraft? Explain the nature of the incident."

I was the Captain, lined up and ready for departure, when the wind picked up.

Runway 34 was in use for arrivals and not free then, so we taxied clear of the departure runway and waited for the wind to ease. We monitored the wind reports and briefed for the conditions.

About twenty minutes later, the gusts dropped back within our limit, and we departed safely. For me, a limit is a hard limit — waiting was the only right call.

10. Model Answer — Q2

"How do you think ATC handled the situation? Could it have been handled differently?"

To their credit, ATC backed us all the way. When we said we were unable to depart, they didn't pressure us, and they checked straight away whether runway 34 was free. It was tied up with arrivals, but they gave us a place to hold clear and kept us updated with the wind, so we could decide when it was safe.

If runway 34 could have been freed up sooner when the wind changed, that would have helped — that's my only note. They respected our decision and supported the delay, and that was what counted.

11. Follow-up Q&A

  1. Why not take off and handle the crosswind? → The crosswind was above the aircraft's limit, and limits exist for safety, so we do not exceed them.
  2. What options did you have? → Wait for the wind to ease, or use a runway more into the wind if one is available.
  3. Why did you brief again before departure? → To review the crosswind technique and the conditions for the runway we would actually use.
  4. Who makes this decision? → The Captain, based on the aircraft limits and the latest wind — it is a clear safety decision.
